Where should I start if I don’t know the coast yet?
Start with how you want an ordinary day to feel, not with the map. Walking to a café, or driving to the beach? Neighbours close by, or nothing but hills? Once you know that, the list gets much shorter. Then visit, at different times of day if you can.
Coast or hills: what changes day to day?
Close to the sea, you can usually walk to the beach, the cafés and the shops, with more people around in summer. The hills trade that for space, quiet and views, and you drive more. A day in each is often the quickest way to know.
Is the coast busy all year?
The larger towns, like Marbella and Estepona, live and work all year round. Smaller, more resort-like places can be much quieter outside the summer. If you plan to live here full time, visit in winter too.
Should I rent before I buy?
If you can, yes. A few months in a place tells you things a viewing can’t: how it sounds at night, how long the school run takes, where the winter sun falls.
